RareFam, today we are cooking our favorite meal!
Again; the question may arise, what does food have to do with my Mental Health, right?!
But let me share a quick #truth with you. #RealRawRare
#SpeakIt – Growing up we didn’t have much when it came to food and so this is one of the many reasons I became an unhealthy foodie. I was definitely an emotional eater and it felt like a comfort to me.
It started years back when I started overeating to release the pain of what was happening at home. On other days I overate when there was food because of the days when we didn’t have any food, I felt like Joh, and now I have to eat because I knew that I might not be able to eat the next day or days. And so it evolved into a bad relationship with food. I was unhealthy and felt even worse mentally and about my body.
I started healthy eating habits back in 2020. And what I can share is that my healthy eating increased my energy and helped me with heavy days; meaning mentally feeling good. It became a process of unlearning what was sort my default and relearning new ways to eat. However, there was a fine line to not to jump into “yoyo diets” but rather to make healthier choices and enjoy food rather than overeating and connecting the emotional side to it.
Including food in this challenge was absolutely necessary because
1. I’m a huge foodie and
2. it does have an impact on how we feel, emotionally.
No overeating intentions or diving in when I go through the most.
When I look at food now and prep it, it is more of how I can nourish my body by exploring different recipes, ingredients, and spices and I just enjoy it differently now! Still a foodie though, but switched to healthier eating habits!
RareFam, trauma, and mental health have so many layers. And it can turn something good into ugly or damaging without one realizing it – like food.
